Markets Outlook for the week of August 17 – 23, 2026

Alibaba and Economic Indicators to Shape Markets

Is the market ready for the week ahead?

Asia markets enter the week after the Hang Seng Index fell 1.1% to 25,116.85, highlighting recent pressure on regional equities. China’s fixed asset investment is forecast to contract 6.2% year-over-year, deepening from a 5.7% drop last period, signaling weaker capital spending. Alibaba reports earnings on August 20 with a consensus EPS estimate of 1.77, following a sharp -7.09% post-earnings move last quarter. Xiaomi and NetEase also report, providing further signals for technology stocks as both posted mixed price reactions in recent quarters. A weak macro trend and sensitive tech earnings suggest positioning will stay defensive, with headline indices reacting most to negative surprises.

Key Upcoming Events

China Fixed Asset Investment Update
China's fixed asset investment (YTD YoY) is released on August 23. Forecast is -6.2% versus previous -5.7%. This release comes as weakness in capital spending pressures broader growth and weighs on monetary policy expectations. A deeper contraction would reinforce the cautious tone in Asia, given ongoing softness across key regional indicators and fragile equity sentiment. Hang Seng Index and CSI 300 are most sensitive, with fixed asset investment shocks typically transmitted via risk sentiment into regional equities and cyclicals.

Alibaba Quarterly Earnings Report
Alibaba (BABA) will report its quarterly results on August 20. Consensus EPS estimate is 1.77, up from previous -0.07. This print is crucial given a prior -7.09% post-earnings move and continued pressure on major China tech shares. As the benchmark for large China tech, Alibaba’s results will help investors gauge sector earnings durability in a weaker macro backdrop. The Hang Seng Index shows the most immediate sensitivity, primarily through the tech sector’s weight in index moves.

NetEase Financial Results Release
NetEase (NTES) announces its earnings on August 20. Estimated EPS is 2.20 versus previous 2.40. Given NetEase’s -4.06% last quarter reaction and the drag from consumer caution, this report signals the state of gaming and digital demand. Macro headwinds and previous weak consumer signals increase the impact of any earnings surprises, deepening focus on sector earnings breadth. Trading in NetEase and tech sector performance in the Hang Seng Index are most sensitive, affected via earnings-driven sentiment.

Xiaomi Earnings Release
Xiaomi (XIACY) reports its results on August 18. EPS estimate is 0.16 compared to previous 0.13. As consumer electronics face mixed demand, Xiaomi’s print offers key insight into downstream Asian consumer trends during persistent macro softness. The report carries extra weight as investors assess margin resilience and potential for growth in a subdued regional environment. CSI 300 index and electronics sector shares tend to respond quickly, transmitted principally through earnings revisions.

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Earnings Report
Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKXCY) reports earnings on August 19. EPS estimate is 0.49 versus previous 0.52. As HK capital markets reflect regional equity volatility, this report matters for reading trading volume trends and fee resilience. The update will add context around the impact of recent equity outflows and market turnover pressure in Asia. Hang Seng Index is the most sensitive, responding through volumes and fee income outlook coursing into exchange-linked shares.

Key Macroeconomic Reports

China's fixed asset investment is expected to fall by 6.2%, more than the previous 5.7% drop and far below the four-quarter average of -1.1%. This steeper decline signals deepening weakness in infrastructure and property spending, raising fresh growth concerns. China's house price index just slipped by 3.3%, worse than its -2.9% four-quarter average, showing continued pressure in the real estate market. In Singapore, non-oil exports had plunged 8.9% in the last report, sharply reversing a 5.8% average gain, highlighting growing trade risks in the region. Asian markets will watch these numbers closely as repeated or worsening declines may drive expectations for new policy support or add stress to sectors linked to property and exports.

Singapore revises its annual growth forecast sharply higher on AI-related boost

Singapore has significantly raised its annual GDP growth forecast to between 4.5% and 5.5% for 2026, up from a previous estimate of 2% to 4%. This adjustment is attributed to stronger-than-expected economic performance in the first half of the year, particularly from AI-related sectors and exports. The Ministry of Trade and Industry also noted that the impact of the U.S.-Iran conflict on the economy has been less severe than anticipated.
